Outback and Kangaroo Island Rail Adventure (departing Sydney)
Experience the Outback aboard The Ghan Expedition on this extensive 11 day/10 night rail journey. Discover the best of Darwin, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island and learn about the history and indigenous culture of the Tiwi Islands. This tour offers the opportunity to also do off train experiences in Katherine, Alice Springs and the opal mining town of Coober Pedy.
Today fly to Darwin, and on arrival make your own way to your accommodation. This evening you may like to head to the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets for a spot of shopping, and to pick up something delicious for dinner. With over 200 stores and food vendors, it is truly an experience you do not want to miss.
Overnight: Argus Hotel Darwin or similar, 3 nights
Travel by ferry to Bathurst Island, where you will enjoy a traditional welcome ceremony, followed by a cultural walking tour with a local Tiwi guide. Visit the Patakijiyali Culture Museum, which houses collections of Tiwi Island culture, artefacts, sculptures and historic photographs. After lunch take part in a cultural art session creating your own Tiwi style art piece momento.
Enjoy a short 45 minute cruise around Darwin Harbour and learn about this tropical city, it's wharves, and history including the WWII bombing of Darwin and Cyclone Tracy which devastated the city in 1974.
At the end of the cruise you may like to stay and have lunch at one of the many popular restaurants or cafes in the Cullen Bay Marina. This is a favourite spot to dine for both holiday makers and locals, with a variety of taste sensations from Greek to Italian to Asian cuisine, and an amazing array of seafood.
This morning depart Darwin, enjoy lunch as you travel, and arrive into Katherine in the early afternoon. Choose to cruise Nitmiluk Gorge, admiring the large rock formations that tower over the calm water. Home to the Indigenous Jawoyn people, you may prefer to join an art cruise of the Gorge learning about the interpretations of the rock art dating back 40,000 years. A third option is the Katherine Outback Experience where you will be entertained by horse and working dog demonstrations, live music and amusing bush tales.

This morning you’ll be greeted by a view of the spectacular Red Centre, and a full day of excursions await you in Alice Springs. Visit Simpsons Gap, a magical spot where flora, fauna and Indigenous culture all come together, or join a town tour and learn about the history of Alice Springs, the Royal Flying Doctors and the School of the Air. Then it’s on to the Desert Wildlife Park, where you will enjoy lunch, and free time to explore this native wildlife park. This evening enjoy dinner under the stars at the historic Telegraph Station.
From your morning stop at Manguri, venture into the weird and wonderful opal mining town of Coober Pedy, where you can join a tour and see how the residents live underground. Dinner is served back on the train as your journey continues south.
Enjoy a leisurely brunch as you prepare for your mid-morning arrival into Adelaide. After checking in to your hotel, you may like to wander around and soak up the atmosphere of the popular Adelaide Central Markets, or this evening, head down to Rundle Street to choose from one of the many busy restaurants serving up delicious meals.

Why not take in one of Adelaide’s stunning wine regions today. There are daily tours that operate to the Barossa, taking in a selection of wineries and somewhere delicious for lunch. If you prefer to follow your own wine trail, you could always hire a car and head up to the Adelaide Hills and sample their crisps whites. Or if a bold shiraz is more your style, McLaren Vale is only a 45 minute drive south of the city.
Early this morning you will be transferred to Cape Jervis to board the ferry to Kangaroo Island. Visit Seal Bay Conservation Park for a guided beach walk amongst a colony of wild Australian sea lions, before heading to lunch at Vivonne Bay Bistro. In the afternoon head to Flinders Chase National Park to see the iconic Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, and finish at the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park where you will see kangaroos and koalas up close. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your accommodation in Kingscote.

This morning visit Raptor Domain for the fascinating and educational In-flight Birds of Prey display, before continuing on the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, where you will learn all about the oil extraction process, plus enjoy a delicious lunch. Stop at Clifford's Honey Farm to learn about their range of Ligurian Bee honey products and see a working bee hive. Finish the day at False Cape Wines Cellar Door, where you will enjoy a structured wine tasting before free time in Penneshaw to buy some dinner (own cost), and return to Adelaide on the ferry and coach.

Today there is time for any last minute shopping or sightseeing, before flying back to Sydney.
